Beginner-friendly dressmaking classes.
Have you ever followed a commercial sewing pattern only to discover the finished garment doesn’t fit properly?
You’re not alone. Most commercial sewing patterns are designed around a standard body shape, yet very few of us fit those measurements perfectly. That’s why learning how to adjust sewing patterns and create made-to-measure clothing is one of the most valuable sewing skills you can develop.
My dressmaking courses are designed for people with basic sewing skills who want to move beyond simple sewing projects and start creating garments that fit their body, style and lifestyle.
Learn the foundations of dressmaking
Many people can follow a sewing pattern, but few understand how to choose the correct size, assess fit issues, or alter a pattern to suit their body shape.
In my dressmaking courses, you’ll learn how to:
- Read and understand commercial sewing patterns
- Take accurate body measurements
- Select the correct pattern size based on your “true” measurements
- Compare body measurements with finished garment measurements
- Identify common fit issues
- Make simple pattern adjustments
- Understand garment construction techniques
- Create professionally finished garments
These skills form the foundation of creating a wardrobe of clothes that fit and flatter your unique shape.

Make clothes that fit your body.
One of the most frustrating aspects of ready-to-wear clothing is poor fit. Too tight across the bust, too loose at the waist, shoulders that don’t sit correctly, or sleeves that feel restrictive.
My dressmaking courses teach you how to make common fitting adjustments so your garments work with your body rather than against it. You’ll gain a better understanding of how clothing is designed and learn practical techniques that can be applied to future sewing projects.

Choose quality over quantity.
Dressmaking encourages a different approach to clothing. Instead of purchasing multiple low-quality garments that wear out quickly, you can invest your time in creating fewer, better-quality pieces that you’ll enjoy wearing for years.
You’ll have complete control over fabric selection, construction methods and finishing techniques, allowing you to create garments that reflect your personal style while prioritising quality and longevity.
A more sustainable approach to fashion
Making your own clothes can be a more sustainable alternative to fast fashion. By creating garments you genuinely love and wear regularly, you’re less likely to make impulse purchases that end up unworn at the back of your wardrobe.
You can also choose quality fabrics designed to last. Before purchasing new fabric, it’s worth asking family and friends if they have fabric tucked away in cupboards and sewing rooms. Many people have inherited collections from parents, grandparents, aunts or relatives who sewed in years gone by. These forgotten fabric stashes often contain beautiful cottons, linens, wools and dress fabrics that are difficult to find today and are frequently of a higher quality than many modern alternatives.

Create garments you’re proud to wear
Each dressmaking class focuses on a specific garment category, such as tops, skirts, dresses or pants. By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a finished made-to-measure garment, your adjusted sewing pattern, and the knowledge to apply these techniques to future projects.
Join a dressmaking class.
My dressmaking courses are held in small groups with a maximum of three participants, allowing plenty of personalised guidance and one-on-one support.
Courses are held at my sewing studio in Frenchs Forest on Sydney’s Northern Beaches (near Northern Beaches Hospital) and are ideal for people who already have basic sewing skills and want to learn how to create clothing that fits properly.
If you’re ready to move beyond simply following sewing patterns and start understanding fit, garment construction and made-to-measure dressmaking, I hope you’ll come along to one of my classes.
