  • Duration: 2 hours

You’ll walk away with a new perspective on fashion, fresh ideas for making the most of your clothes, and practical skills you can start using straight away.

“I loved the clothes upcycling workshop. I went straight home and started overhauling my wardrobe.  I now have a pile of clothes that I have started altering to fit me properly and an upcycling pile that I will refashion to suit my style. By the end, I should have a brand new wardrobe of clothes without having spent a cent!  Thanks Bec.  You’re a true inspiration.” – Leanne

What can be covered in each workshop

1. The Facts – Why change is necessary

We begin by looking at the bigger picture. From the growing mountains of textile waste to the hidden environmental costs of fast fashion, this section sheds light on why the way we consume clothing is no longer sustainable. We also explore what really happens to donated garments — and why even small, conscious changes in our habits can make a big difference.

2. The Good News – What we can do

This section focuses on practical, empowering changes we can all make. From shopping with more intention to choosing quality over quantity, we explore simple ways to build more sustainable wardrobe habits. You’ll discover how small, mindful decisions — especially when made collectively — can create a powerful ripple effect.

3. Basic Change – No experience needed

You don’t need to be a sewer or a creative to make a difference. This part of the workshop shares simple, beginner-friendly tips to help you care for your clothes and make them last longer. From easy no-sew repairs to low-effort alterations, you’ll learn practical ways to get more wear out of what you already own.

4. Makers & Creatives – Upcycling inspiration

For those who love getting hands-on, this part of the workshop dives into creative ways to breathe new life into old garments. You’ll discover clever upcycling ideas, simple transformation techniques, and how to turn worn-out or unloved clothing into completely new pieces — all while expressing your personal style.

5. Group Activity – Real-life transformations

To wrap up the session, participants are invited to explore creative ways to revive, repurpose or alter each garment, with ideas for all skill levels. This collaborative segment encourages shared tips, fresh perspectives, and group problem-solving. It’s a powerful way to build connection and prove that change can be creative, achievable, and genuinely rewarding. Attendees are invited to bring items from home or these can be supplied.

“I wanted to say a huge thank you for being part of our Clothing Swap Event. Your workshop was such a highlight – we received so much great feedback on the session. As well, your idea of supporting residents during the swap and making yourself available for advice was fantastic – it created such a positive and welcoming atmosphere. I also really appreciate the time and effort you put into helping set up beforehand and packing down afterwards. It was an absolute pleasure working with you, and I’d love to do so again in the future.” – Michelle Bird, Resource Recovery Education Officer, The Hills Shire Council.
